Reporting Identity Theft
If you become a victim of identity theft, here are some of the steps you should take to report it.
- Contact 1 of 3 major credit bureaus to report the incident and request a fraud alert be placed on your credit file. Once the credit bureau confirms your fraud alert, the other 2 credit bureaus will automatically be notified to place fraud alerts. You may request reports from all 3 credit bureaus. Each will allow 1 free credit report annually. Review your credit reports and notify the credit bureaus immediately of any suspicious activity.
- In addition to calling a credit bureau with your initial identity theft report, it is wise to follow-up in writing to confirm your claim. Be sure to retain a copy for your records.
